AWS research credits
AWS Cloud Credit for Research
AWS offers promotional credit for research projects that test the cloud, build a shared research tool, or teach other people to use it. Graduate students can receive up to USD $5,000. Faculty and research staff are not capped. Reviews often take 90 to 120 days, so this is a poor plan for a job you need this week.
Awarded credit is free. The review is slow, and usage past the credit is billed.
Who it is for
Full-time faculty, full-time research staff, or graduate, postgraduate, or PhD students at an accredited research institution. AWS asks for an official institutional email address.
What you get
AWS promotional credit for the services in the program. EC2 use covered by the credit is for on-demand and spot instances. Student awards stop at USD $5,000. The credit is meant to last for the period AWS sets, or until it is spent.
How to get it
- Create an AWS account before you apply. The program expects one.
- Use your institutional email. Applications from a generic inbox are not accepted.
- Describe one of the three project types they fund: a proof of concept, a shared tool, or a workshop. They decline requests to fund an already running lab.
- Submit and plan on a 90 to 120 day review. There is no expedited queue.
- For this week, use a campus cluster, Nectar, or Kaggle. Treat AWS as the later top-up.
Deadlines
There is no published closing date. Apply when your one-page description is ready. An empty calendar file would only pretend otherwise, so this page does not invent a reminder.
Read this before you apply
- This is not AWS Educate. AWS Educate is training and labs, not a pool of spendable research credit.
- Undergraduate applicants are outside the published eligibility list.
- A three-month review means it cannot be your only plan for a deadline this month.
Check before you rely on this
- Award sizes and the 90 to 120 day review window are from the AWS program page. Offers of this kind change.
