Western Australia

University of Western Australia

Kaya is UWA’s free on-campus cluster. The name is a Noongar greeting. UWA is also a Pawsey partner, so Kaya is the place to learn, and Setonix is the place to go when the job becomes large.

Kaya

Free for UWA staff and students.

Kaya is a mix of CPU and GPU nodes, including some large-memory machines. The queue software is Slurm. Jupyter notebooks, MATLAB, and RStudio are offered in the browser through Open OnDemand, so you do not have to live on the command line for every task. A 2024 survey described a small system, on the order of 1,600 cores and a few dozen GPUs. It is supposed to be a launch pad, not a rival to Setonix.

How to get it

  1. Read the UWA high-performance computing page.
  2. Request a Kaya account with your UWA login. There is no charge for staff and students.
  3. Start with the browser tools if you use R, MATLAB, or Jupyter. Move to a batch job when the work needs to run unattended.
  4. When the job needs Setonix, talk to UWA about the Pawsey partner scheme as well as NCMAS.

  • Core and GPU counts are from the 2024 survey. The UWA page describes the mix of nodes without a full inventory.
